Firearms Safety and You

The safe handling, use and storage of firearms are primary responsibilities of a firearm owner.
Whether using the firearm for hunting, plinking, competition or self-defense, we must thoroughly understand it as well as the shooting sport or action we are engaging in.  We must also ensure it is stored or kept in a safe manner that protects those who do not, or are too young to understand safe and responsible handling practices.

The links below provide access to information and training available to make shooting sports and the ownership of firearms more safe and enjoyable.  It is by no means an exhaustive list, but an excellent place to start.

National Rifle Association Safety Courses (NRA) are the benchmark for firearms handling and shooting instruction.

The International Hunter Education Association (IHEA) is the professional association for 63 state and provincial wildlife conservation agencies, and the 55,000 volunteer instructors who teach hunter education in North America.  The IEHA website contains a wealth of information and links on hunter education and safety.  It also has State by State links to each state's Hunter Education Requirements and each state's Hunter Education Website.

Take the time to learn how your firearm works and how to handle it safely.  Never, never point it at anything you don't want to put a hole through, whether it is loaded or not.   If we all followed this rule, there would be NO accidental shootings.  Be safe.
